The Medicine of the Horse.
Healing with Horses/Reiki with Horses
Enter into a space where time slows, the land speaks, and healing runs deeper than words. Welcome to a sacred journey guided by one of our oldest spiritual allies—Mishtadim/the Horse. To many Native American tribes, the horse is more than an animal. Horses are sacred beings, endowed with wisdom and the power to heal the mind, body and spirit. The horse is seen as a powerful ally, a healer, a teacher and a guide that connects us to the earth, our ancestors and a bridge that connects us between the earthly realm and the higher realms of spirit.
An Ancient Connection
The relationship between the horse and the Native people is one of deep trust and mutual respect that fosters healing on all levels. In stories passed down through the generations, the horse has always been more than just a companion or a tool of labor, the horse is sacred and it’s viewed as an equal. In Lakota and Dakota cultures, horses are known as sun'ka wakan or holy/mysterious dog. They are revered as relatives, connected through a spiritual bond, and believed to be gifts from the Wakíŋyaŋ/Thunder Beings.
Why Horses?
Horses don’t speak our language, they speak to our spirit. In their presence, something ancient awakens within us. Something whole. Something remembering.
Mentally, horses calm the mind. Their grounded energy helps regulate our nervous system, reduce anxiety, and bring us into the present moment.
Emotionally, they reflect what we carry inside, without judgment. This opens space for deep awareness, self-acceptance, and emotional release.
Physically, being with horses lowers cortisol, eases tension and encourages breath, movement and connection to the body.
Spiritually, they guide us back to balance. Back to nature. Back to ourselves. Their medicine reconnects us to the Earth and to the sacred rhythms of life.
Bridging Worlds
Western medicine has made incredible strides in understanding the mind and body. But there is still a longing, a knowing, that healing must also involve the heart, the land, the spirit. Horses help bridge these worlds. We honor both clinical insight and ancient healing. This is where therapy meets ceremony. Where neuroscience meets the Native American teachings of balance, connection, and respect. This is healthcare that doesn’t just treat symptoms. It nurtures wholeness and true authentic healing.

Research from HeartMath
Horses and Humans Energetics: The Study of Heart Rate Variability (HVR) Between Horses and Humans
The information below is from a HeartMath Institute study https://www.heartmath.org/ and the work and experiences at Tao of Horsemanship.
Recent studies conducted by the Institute of HeartMath provide a clue to explain the bidirectional “healing” that happens when we are near horses. According to researchers, the heart has a larger electromagnetic field and higher level of intelligence than the brain. A magnetometer can measure the heart’s energy field radiating up to 8 to 10 feet around the human body. While this is certainly significant it is perhaps more impressive that the electromagnetic field projected by the horse’s heart is five times larger than the human one. The horse’s electromagnetic field is also stronger than ours and can actually directly influence our own heart rhythm.
Horses are also likely to have what science has identified as a coherent heart rhythm (heart rate pattern) which explains why we may feel better when we are around them. Studies have found that a coherent heart pattern or HRV is a robust measure of well-being and consistent with emotional states of calm and joy that is, we exhibit such patterns when we feel positive emotions.
A coherent heart pattern is indicative of a system that can recover and adjust to stressful situations very efficiently. Often times, we only need to be in a horse’s presence to feel a sense of wellness and peace. In fact, research shows that people experience many physiological benefits while interacting with horses, including lowered blood pressure and heart rate, increased levels of beta-endorphins (neurotransmitters that serve as pain suppressors), decreased stress levels, reduced feelings of anger, hostility, tension and anxiety, improved social functioning; and increased feelings of empowerment, trust, patience and self-efficacy.
